Bournemouth to Birmingham by local bus

England's a small country with a large population, right? So it should be really easy to travel from one side to the other using only local buses.

Let's find out!

My original plan was to travel to Manchester using only local buses. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a route between Birmingham and Manchester which took less than 10 hours. I was still going to travel to Birmingham by local bus, but the last leg of the journey would now be by National Express coach.

But I managed the 200km from Bournemouth to Birmingham using only local buses. I saw some wonderful countryside, and visited really interesting places I'd have never seen otherwise.

So click on the links above to find out about my story!

All of the pictures were taken by myself (which is why they're not very good), although not necessarily on this trip.

I have taken no pictures from the bus. The pictures are instead of either the destination, or departure point.

My advice to anyone  planning to do a similar trip is this - plan it!

Sorry to spoil the party! Whilst this kind of road trip would be so much more fun without knowing the route in advance, you would need a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of flexibility to go into it blind.

England's a small country - there is always a route.

But it's not always what you'd think about doing. You can get from Bournemouth to Swindon using common sense. But good luck blagging it from Birmingham to Manchester - the quickest journey I could find was 10 hours, and it was a very strange route indeed.

I wouldn't even have guessed the route from Swindon to Kenilworth without planning the journey in advance.

Spoilers - travelling like this is a really, really fun way to travel around England.

I'd love to hear your comments, and will try to respond, but  please understand that I have a full time job that gets in the way sometimes.

I  will not respond to racists, sexists, homophobes, bigots, or trolls.

I have read about your travels. I enjoyed your little anecdotes about what you heard people say on your trip and the things you know about the places you visited. It was an interesting read and I learned a lot about the different places.
